This is a mix based on the John Steinbeck novel ‘Cannery Row’ which is one of my all time favourite books. I’ve tried to catch the emotions that I felt while reading the book in the mix. The heady carefree jazz, the bluesy Johnny Cash and the mournful Vashti Bunyan.
A departure from my usual electronica stuff – hope you like it!
1 Thelonius Monk – Evonce
2 Charles Mingus – Better Git It In Your Soul
3 Django Reinhardt – Sweet Sue, just you
4 Johnny Cash – Guess Things Happen That Way
5 JJ Cale – Hey Baby
6 Vashti Bunyan – Window Over the Bay
7 Peggy Lee and George Shearing – There’ll Be Another Spring
8 Meredith d’Ambrosio – Alone Together
9 JJ Cale – You Got Something
10 Thelonius Monk – Evonce (Alternate Take)
11 Sonny Rollins – St Thomas
12 Peggy Lee and George Shearing – Dreams Come True
13 Django Reinhardt – Coucou
14 Vashti Bunyan – Winter is Blue

PS – yes I know that there’s some typos in the cover art but I’ll be f***d if I can be arsed to go back and re-do the whole thing 🙂
Been playing this in the office and it’s going down real well. I have a workmate who loves his jazz is loving this mix.
enjoyed it – not all up my street, but interesting all the same. plus a great concept!
Cheers tom! 😀
Thanks for the comments guys – I guessed this might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Thanks for giving it a try Lenodd, you might find it grows on you 😉
Keep em coming Tom. For me this is one of the best things about b00mb0x – the variety of stuff that gets posted, and usually people will get to listen to stuff that they wouldn’t normally bother with. I gave this a good listen, trouble is that jazz is not one of my favourite genres. As len says, great concept.
Thanks for the comment matrix, I figured it wouldn’t be to most people’s tastes but I’m really pleased people have given it a chance anyway. I love this place for having such an open-minded approach to music 🙂
Like others here, this isn’t what I usually listen to, but I enjoyed it all the more so for that reason. Some beautiful bluesy folk to counter the jazz created a lovely mix. Gone to the keeper pile.
Great concept too. I tried reading Cannery Row about 20 years ago but I was too young to appreciate it, maybe time to dust it off.
Thanks mr_lovely 🙂 Glad you liked it!
I can’t recommend the book ‘cannery row’ highly enough. It’s one of my all time favourites – funny, poignant, moving and whimsical all at the same time. Simply amazing! If you do happen to re-read and like it then I would recommend Tortilla Flats and Sweet Thursday (both by steinbeck as well)
Great mix Tom, some really good Jazz selections espec Thelonious Monk & Charlie Mingus… and the blues was a nice touch to contrast against the jazz.
This was my cup of tea, albeit something that I don’t listen to enough, but with somewhere in the region of 3,000 CD’s I don’t have much time to listen any single genre too much.
I also might give the book a go too, I did like the Steinbeck novels that I read years ago…
Thanks Dangerscouse!
I’d highly recommend the book – it’s only a short one 😉
