Summer is coming to a close for some, and for the forementioned “some”, this generally implies the start of a new school year. Here at the ‘b0x, we’re pleased to offer a graduate level course of our own, aptly title “Big Beat Fundamentals”, and your professor is Dj Mitzur@. Graduation of this course is simple: all the prerequisites are within this tracklist.
Norman Cook runs rampant in this mix, with all his various aliases. Alongside him is the sampling house master Armand Van Helden, Tim Deluxe, and Daft Punk. The big beat / house veterans know the tunes by name, and you’ll soon understand why. And who can forget the out of control energy that come from the Wildchild release? Big Beat was a big deal in its prime, and this mix is a full on testament to that.
Download this, give it a listen, and pay attention to each artist on this set. Aside from Mr Cook, they were prominent electronic players of the mid to late 90’s — you may find that you’ve missed out on one helluva sound, and this mix does its best to fill you in on the history of a sound.
Enjoyed this overall, some tunes I enjoyed more than others. BTW what happened at around the 29 min mark with the Heavy Rock & Tim Deluxe tunes? It jumps from one to the other very quickly.
Did you do this on your CD decks or you still using the PC?

Stu, this was done on my CDJ’s (after a few practice takes) and I tried to go for a more of a party approach to my passages where I felt necessary, so some shorter passages or even cuts were employed .
At the 29 min I used a small 15 sec. premade collage to jump from the Heavy Rock to the Tim Deluxe … maybe it doesn’t do it for everybody…
And I know the levels vary slightly even though nobody said it (yet) … still don’t have a pair of monitors and I’m doin’ them on my headphones … So …
Yeah I did notice that the levels were a bit ‘screechy’ in places. Doesn’t your mixer or recording programme have level monitors? I’d thoroughly recommend them if they haven’t, I couldn’t live without them.
BTW mixing is impressive; didn’t hear a beat out of place.
Yes Stu, my DJM 800 surely has level monitors & quite plenty of them & also the soundforge, but you know some cases it will show right on your level monitors but still there’s the difference (as I’ve noticed more than once)… that’s why the old trusted ear is best for adjustments … hopefully by the end of next month I’ll be set-up with some decent monitors … I was lookin’ at the JBL LSR 4326P’s … quite impressive, the price too … but, as you’ve already seen, if I have to spend some money I’d rather spend more in the beginning & get the quality then have to bother later …
Thanx Stu, as said it took a few takes, and my CDJ 1000 Mk3’s surely help too 8) they keep the beat pretty tight. ๐

money well spent if you’re doing it full time and professionally.
A good fun mix this one. Some of the old Norman Cook tunes are a bit over-familiar now but you keep the good vibes going throughout.
I fancied a bit of proper noise in me ears tonight, and this mix hit the spot, square on !!!!
