I dared not call this Dazz (disco jazz) because I have used the disco tag too often, so let’s just call it 4/4 jazz. I snagged the title from the Donald Byrd song, but didn’t use it (that and a Santana track missed the cut). I have been collecting mid to late 70’s jazz lps for a while, and have wanted to make a mix of the 4 to the floor songs that remind me so much of what house music sounds like when it’s good and deep.
Yes! Loved this – id argue bourgie bourgie is just plain disco, but who cares – its not everyone’s cup of tea but i was smiling throughout. weird I’ve been playing a rmx of the grove Washington Jr truck a lot lately. ace mix anyways – loved how it was stitched together.
Thanks much Lenodd! I was choosing from a few Grover Washington Jr tracks (judging by his album covers, he spent the 70’s without a shirt on). I tried to sprinkle vocals tracks in to keep the mix from too much jazz noodling. I love how disco influenced so much music in the late 70’s (even country music oddly enough), and jazz brought about some great songs from it. Bourgie Bourgie I first heard on a Larry Levan mix, and I was hooked and had to wait for the right mix to put it into. If Ashford and Simpson sang on the track, I would have kept it for another (I love “Found A Cure” used on Dimitri From Paris’s Playboy mix). I appreciate your comment, esp since your mixes are so killer.
Loved most of this, apart from the Rah Band track which is just a bit too cheesy for me. Expansions, on the other hand, is imo one of the best tunes ever in any genre – and definitely has a proto-house vibe I think.
great stuff indeed. im familiar wiv many ov these artists: grover, benson, schifrin, lonnie liston, idris, crusaders. “images” was the last crusaders rekkid i got & probably me favourite (altho “2nd crusade” cums close, hehe). tucked away a few trax fer a fusion mix yonks & ages ago, but only about 1/2 wot i need
Thanks guys.
I like songs that make era obsolete (70s,80s,00s) but I wanted to stick to mainly the 70s with a little 80s this mix. I love Expansions, and am guilty of first hearing it from Scott Grooves feat Lonnie. Great remake, but the original just kicks all kinda butt. Swamp, this mix has been ages in the works for me, so I know what you mean. I still have a disco-rock mix that may never see the light of day (Chicago “I’m A Man”, Kongas “Gimme Some Lovin”, Four on the Floor “Lady Jane”, etc), because I am only 1/4 way through the list after 6 years. This mix was a weight off my shoulders, so I’m glad you guys like it.
