Part 2 has a similar flavour – if differnt era???
Thanks for the Mix.
It was great & rewarding. It moved through the material so well.I don’t think I knew even one track.
Loved that last one the most.Nixon-then.Chimpie-now.
Cover seems totally interchangeable.
Sorry to hear about the mix woes.
I am going through that right now.
Well,4th times the charm.lol
hey dez !
thanks a lot !
i’m going to listen to this one very carefully …
thanks for the funky time !
soop’
Oh, I forgot to mention it…
There are occasional “bip” sounds, this happened because I made it live, using Traktor 2 and recorded the result with Soundforge… I only heard them while listening to it with the headphones…
All the songs come from a series of 8 compilations called “Funky Jams” I found on Oink and loved it alot.
Have you guys noticed the wicked cover of Summertime ?
@ SgtMash : I’ll listen to it asap! thx for mentioning.
oh, and btw, “The Perfect circle – Dip sick” sounds very much like Bowie’s “fame”, don’t it ? I think it come from a Chic song, but I’m not sure, anyone has an idea ?
funky sound ge’rron down
😈
Great mix! WoW! I have not heard some these songs in years! “If It Don’t Fit Don’t Force” such a classic!!! Great o’l funk-o-ramma!!! Oh yes, this is all hitting the spot and bringing me back to the 70’s… woohoo! Makn’ me want to wear Bell-Bottom’s again.. oh but I guess I’m revealing my age.. wooOps! ~ Yesterday, today & Tomorrow – D. minor vamp – this one is new to me.. awesome dirty guitar joy toward the end of this track!! Just great!!!! One.. Two.. everybody HipDrop!!! 🙂 Lot of new tracks on here that I enjoyed much! This mix does capture a “particular” funk that just is not found today. Tanks for sharing.
…you know… The Perfect circle – Dip sick
does have a slight similarity to Bowie’s “fame”. It’s more of a funk style I think your picking up on though. The baseline and that funky guitar stroke is what’s bringing the similarity I think. I’m thinking the backup band Bowie had for the Fame track knew a thing or two about funk 🙂
“Fame” is so funky James Brown even nicked the backing track for his “Hot (I Need To Be Loved, Loved, Loved, Loved)”! Mix looks great, I’ll check it out now.
Enjoying this mix a lot, just heard “Dip Sick” (sure that shouldn’t be Dip Stick?!) and I agree with Mr. G, it’s more of a stylistic thing than any specific musical similarity, unlike “Hot” which is practically identical. Just noticed that “Family Tree” was nicked by Mighty Dub Katz on “It’s Just a Groove”. Anyway, I love “If It Don’t Fit, Don’t Force It”, which is the only track here I’ve heard before – tune 😀 !
you’re right, steve, it’s Dip stick !
You guys liking this thing should go for the 8 cds compilations if you can find them, I’ve compiled my 24 favorites, but there are tons of others . . .
Oh . . . I won’t be able to upload a mix next month, so… maybe it’ll be another funky jam when I come back from Turkey.
I’ll make a deep search for the origin of the “fame” bowie song, but I’m pretty sure it comes from a guitar rhythm by Nile Rodgers, but I can’t recall the song. 😯
nabbed this offa wikipedia:
“During a six-week break from his tour in mid-1974, Bowie recorded a series of songs for a new album in Sigma Sound Studios with Carlos Alomar, who brought in Vandross, Clark, Davis, and bassist Emir Kassan to contribute to the recordings as well. Most of the material for the Young Americans album was recorded during these sessions, and Alomar joined Bowie for the second leg of the Diamond Dogs tour (dubbed “The Philly Dogs Tourâ€) in September-December 1974. In January 1975, Bowie and John Lennon recorded “Across the Universe” at Electric Lady Studios and from this session resulted the impromptu song “Fame” – which evolved from the guitar riff Alomar had originated for the song “Footstompin’” during the Philly Dogs shows. With writing credit divided between Bowie, Alomar and Lennon (and funky guitar riffs later copied for James Brown’s 1975 recording “Hot (I Need to be Loved)”), “Fame” gave Bowie his first US#1 single, and its parent album Young Americans (1975) marked Carlos Alomar’s first appearance on a David Bowie album. This began a long period of collaboration in which Alomar led the rhythm section of Alomar/Dennis Davis/George Murray that would underpin Bowie’s recordings for the next half-decade, behind a variety of lead guitarists (Earl Slick, Stacey Heydon, Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, etc).”
Can I ask a question about the tracklist? Which is the track which is based on the theme from “2001: A Space Odyssey”? If I’m reading the tracklisting correctly, it looks like it’s The Fatback Band “Fatbacking”, but I’ve got that and I’m sure it’s not. I’d like to know because I want that tune!
Finally listened to this all the way through, great stuff, those “Funky Jams” comps are definitely on my wishlist – vinyl of course!
Love the funk, love Dez mixes! Another winner!
Heard quite a few of these before, but didn’t know the names of some.
‘Funky Jams’ is on my wishlist as well….
Steve, I don’t understand where you hear a 2001 space odyssey based track (I saw the movie two or three times and only recall Zarathustra).
Glad to make you discover those wonderful compilations, there’s nothing to throw away on those albums methinks.
If you’re lucky enough to have an oink account, go for it they’re there . . .
I guess you Djs will indeed prefer the vinyl versions.
Anyway, I’m on vacation in Turkey for two weeks (I leave tomorrow) I’ve filled my ipod with your mixes . . . miam. see you guys in october . . .
i’m sure there’s a track, which appears to be Fatbackin’, that uses Zarathustra… sounded like it to me anyway!
Just listened to it.
Those three trumpet notes seems the same ones as the intro of Zarathustra indeed, didn’t notice before
This is pure gold !!!
Only as far as Family Tree, & sadly, have to go to work now. ;-(
Cant wait to hear the rest of this fantastic collection.
Thank you soooo much for puttin this mix up on here dEZ.
Great work fella.
🙂
Cant smile wide enough !!
🙂
lovely funky tracks – enjoyed this dez! 🙂
Nasty…With a large helping of Boogie Butt. Hey Ruby is the bomb. Plus, a very cool cover.
Peace.
absolutely lovin’ this one on this mellow Sunday morning… I know I’m months behind… too bad about the “bip” noises — but I can live with it…
another nice one Dez.
