This mix was commissioned by Strictly Kev as a companion piece to his Solid Steel Robot mix which aired last week. It was suppose to be a collaboration, however Kev had set himself aside some rules, and he wanted some older sounds & a premise of the future of robotics from the view point of the past. A large percentage of his songs were old rock n roll based, whilst most of what I had were more electro, I was after the “sound†of a robot, vocoders & futuristic music; robots singing the Beatles, the talking dictionary tripping out to the Orb, robots falling in love & looking after our basic needs.
After fishing the net for anything I could find on robots, I started to hear some fabulous “unknown†bands, mainly from Myspace. Meeting up with Kev in July we decided that I would help with samples but that we would go on to do 2 separate mixes. (I’m trying to convince him to host the mix rather than just leave it as a Solid Steel airing)
Kev’s mix resides around the mechanical man with most songs never getting past the 80’s whilst mine gives the idea of robots wanting to be human (but always being discriminated against) & just as vulnerable as computers are today. Indeed a Robot will only ever be a glorified computer; it will break down, get viruses & have to be rebooted at times. Being an IT support person, (who has to figure out why computers aren’t working) I would hate Helen Virginia Leidermeyer’s future with robots; I only just trust computers; never mind fixing a robot (or a cyborg).
With both mixes there were tones of samples that could have been used (& many popular artists); with the advent of the Transformers movie in the UK, Kev broke his rule to make a modern Transformers breakbeat collage; which can be found at the beginning of his mix & on his myspage page.
A number of samples & tracks on my mix were in fact videos, so the Robot webpage has the added bonus of links to these videos. Also Myspace will have these & more videos of robots today. Some are just plain scary.
A big thank you to all the artist’s who gave permission for all works, videos, songs, & even the robot jpg cover.
OK – … made it through the whole mix. WoW! Just lovely! Great theme! I love what you did to fluffy couds 😉 I’m feeling a bit metalic now that the mix is done. I think I have been robotisized! I could have done without the #2 bit 😉 I was surprised you did not have anything from the Krafwerk – Robots cd. Some good items on there that would have fit nicely. However, some very nice track selections you have made for this mix. I really enjoyed myself all the way through! Thanks so much for sharing it! You have inspired me to work harder on my mixes.
Thanks Mr Greencheese – I used a homemade Kraftwerk sample “Man machine superhuman being” with a vocoder & the first 4 bar intro of Robots time stretched, but it maybe too subtle. I wanted to keep away from the “standard†samples to make something a bit more unique. As for the Fluffy Clouds (I’d love to take credit but cannot) this comes from the “Snugles†(Negativland listing I have been a member of for many years), check the site that could come down soon if it does not get anymore traffic;
I keep finding more & more samples & tracks that could have been used but as this mix had a deadline I had to just stop at some point. Shame it never went to air but DK (the executive producer of Solid Steel) is not a Robot fan & thought 2 hours was just too much.
Lot of mixes to listen to this month… Just catching up now!
This one I liked a lot. I’m a big fan of Robots and novelty samples so had high hopes for it and it didn’t disappoint. Muscialy some good tracks and some more *ahem* experimental ones, but it all works well with the theme. Also the attention to detail and sheer amount of time it must have taken are well impressive.
Just listened…Absolute quality m8. This must have took a helluva lot of time and patience!! Thought Ed (Robot Man) would like it!!
Fantastic – thank you.
cheers

btw that Micrsoft Toilet track is so funny I nearly pissed meself (ahem). Trying to get a copy off Brian – it doesn’t seem to exist anymore.
Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Excellently crafted with a well structured narrative. Especially loved the little fluffy clouds edit, and too many other bits to mention. Shame that you didn’t find space for Mr Hopkinson’s Computer though (next time?)
xcellente mix 🙂 bit ov data in there woz fun. thought u wudda hadda bit ov rachel in bladerunner… hehehe
very well put together & executed. its pretty darn difficult to put somat like this togevver & keep the vibe goin. voice snippets woz great, specially steve austin. sometimes voices went on a bit 2 long azza solo (eg ms toilet, but very funny 😆 ). i preferred when trax woz buzzin along behind. a small gripe & easily vanquished in view ov the quality throughout
Sooo many missed robot samples 😥 – never really watched Futurama but man did I miss some beauties ❗
Bladerunner was on the list but just did’nt make it in the mix – but the next mix has Bladerunner in it, albeit the Cosmic Baby mix.
I’ll post it next month “Space Madness”, an old mix but hey I’m busy taking LSD 👿
Thank u for the kind comments – Swamp wot language is dat in (reminds me of Pyschic TV)

Electronica can get a bit boring for me after a while, but this kept me entertained the whole way through.
Technically I’m in awe of this mix!! The time and effort that this must have taken…..I’d have given up halfway through!!!!
Very very impressive, HDD.

Top work!
