Timeless Slumber: A Collection of Ambient (Un)Classics
à ;Grumh – Bucarresse
Ryuichi Sakamoto – Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence
Sven Vath – The Birth of Robby
Chris Brann (Wamdue) – Pacific Shift Flux
D-Note – Deep Water
Roger Eno – Recalling Winter
Richard H. Kirk – Lagoon West
This is not a mix, just a collection of my favorite ambient tracks that have stood the test of time (and in their entirety). I have done a few guest hosts on the local radio for ambient shows in the 90’s, so I have plenty of ambient music, but most of it sounds dated to me. The Fax, Rising High, Reflective, etc stuff was very good, just sorta sounds like trance w/out beats or just boring drones now. These tracks though had more going for them, a more organic feel that kept my interest for their whole 8-13 minutes.
The à ;Grumh track comes from my late 80’s fascination with all things Wax Trax/Play It Again Sam!, and with such a crappy album comes this ambient gem “Bucarresse” that sticks in my head on repeat all these years later. The Chris Brann track is from a cassette promo from ’93 that showed he was destined for bigger better things. The D-note track is from a boring album, this piano/bass gem stuck out like a sore thumb. The Sven Vath track (not completely ambient) is haunting. And my all time fave ambient track, Richard H Kirk’s (of Cabaret Voltaire) “Lagoon West” could go on for an hour and I wouldn’t mind. I’ve got actual mix ideas coming up, just paused to share these ambient faves of mine.
