These are some of the tracks I loved before Progressive House became a curse word. Labels like Limbo, Cowboy, Skunk, Stress, etc. I know most of these are big tunes, but I’ve not heard them in a while. RIP Progressive House, 1992-1995.
(Thanks to Rich Ranck for kicking off the mix by sending me original D:ream track from their 4 Things 2 Come EP, and to my wife for the cover art)
Hi Brsicoe
What a great selection, I think I must have 90% of these. I remember back in the day hearing Pascal’s Bongo Massive on the Pete Tong show and spending the next year or so tracking it down (got all three eventually!). No such problems nowadays of course… U R spot on about the labels u mention as well, I used to get everything those 4 put out. Great days – I know I’m gonna love this one, cheers hp 🙂
Thanks for the props… great to hear many of these tracks again!
Thanks HP! Those were exciting days, when you wouldn’t question spending $10 a pop on a single, and then play it multiple times. The tunes were fresh, and you could rely on labels for different styles of music. I look at my record box and wince at the money spent, but at least it went to tangible items. I remember hearing a mix tape of a local dj in ’92, and was blown away by these new house sounds that truly progressed in a different direction than NY garage.
Thanks, Rich! It’s from your radio shows and multiple mix tapes. I played the crap out of the D:ream tape back in the day, so when they cheesed it up for the Labour Party elections, I felt it was great for their pocket book, but the original was soo much better. Thanks again for sending the file for that one!
Awwww man, this is a wonderful mix, n no mistake !!! 🙂
So many tunes to just LURVE all over again.
Thank you thank you Mr Briscoe.
🙂
Brings back some lovely, hazy memories… always great to hear Gat Décor’s ‘passion’… raised rooves in many a dingy basement, Golden Girls, Aloof, et al… flashbacksE
Thanks Firestopper and Midge! This was the soundtrack to the all night long dancing for me as well. I loved the tracks that had those parts that just made you go crazy (the piano in Passion, the chant in Mighty Ming, the vocoder in Talk To Me). It’s 3am, and without drugs, the music just moves your feet. For me, when the glowsticks started showing up, it was time for me to exit and get some zzzzzs at home, let the new crowd take over.
Praise is the only proper response to this big gem of a mix. I did know every track, and you did them up great.
I never miss the chance to play and replay, a Briscoe mix. Thanks.
Very kind words! Thanks Konrad.
This was great – loved the lot and got all of them – been a while since i listened to this and some have aged very well! This sort of stuff was the soundtrack to my raving years – loved stress records, cowboy, limbo, etc – there’s a few other tunes which I wanted to hear alongside these! Thanks for the mix – good stuff! 😀
Thanks Len! Always look forward to your mixes and appreciate your comments. Progressive house was exciting, with so many good tunes. Progressive had such a range of styles, from the driving loops to the soaring vocals to the massive breakdowns. I was listening to Ima this week , and I can’t believe how good it still sounds – BT must have been influenced by Detroit , Chicago and Sasha for it (then he – along with the whole genre – went to crap). I was hoping Progressive would turn toward an Orbital styled breaks-house, but it instead became pure yuck. It’s funny how Trance and Progressive became the same sound, when initially Trance was Harthouse/Eye Q/Rising High/etc. The wrong turn left a sour taste in most of us towards the genre, so it’s good that what we remembered as good is still very good.
for me the watershed was when it turned into epic house or whatever its called. Sasha rinsed it to death and there were heaps of overblown nonsense. House didnt need to be epic, but it learned from that. I still like the 2 phat cnuts tune on yoshitoshi that bt and sasha did – that was the move onwards.
Particularly liked the first half of this mix; familiar tunes but well worth dusting off. Great job.
