For those who remember when Trance wasn’t a dirty word. Trance was MFS, Harthouse, Rising High, etc. Trance was an uplifing feeling with tracks like Age Of Love and Stella. This mix started with the first time I heard EXhale by Plastikman. It had that strain of trance tucked in the otherwordly hook, very unlike Richie’s other productions. There are a few oldies that were never trance tracks (FSOL, Rum and Black) mixed into otherwise new trance tracks. Enjoy!
Thanks Len for the compliment! I saw the Lindstrom album filed under Disco House, and this track ‘Tensions” certainly doesn’t fall under that. I remember when trance went backwards, and was hoping it would have gone in the direction of Orbital’s lite breaks and soaring tracks like Lush 3.
Before I listen to this, looks great – I loved the early trance around the 92-93 era but by a couple of years later it had become pretty formulaic. Calcium is an all-time favourite. Interested to hear the new tracks. Filings online, especially on Beatport and Juno, frequently don’t make much sense to me!
Thanks Steve! FSOL “Accelerator” LP has been on repeat for the last few months for me, rediscovering it. I love Papa New Guinea like anyone else, but was more into Lifeforms and ISDN . Now, all the Accelerator tracks sound so much today. And early trance was so new and exciting before it went kerplunk. Maybe drum and bass will find a new soft spot for me as well after all these years.
Always good to hear old mixed with new, not enough DJs do it in my opinion. I hadn’t heard most of these before, only Orca and Calcium.
Just for fun (!?) I looked these tracks up on Beatport to see how they’re tagged, results in order:
Electronica / Downtempo
?
Deep House
Indie Dance / Nu Disco or Electronica / Downtempo (yep two different listings for the same track)
Deep House
Techno
Tech House
?
Electronica / Downtempo
Techno
Indie Dance / Nu Disco
?
I don’t think anyone really knows the difference between these supposed genres any more, I certainly don’t!
I get it. When you hear EXHale, it’s hard to say it sounds like Hawtin’s other music. It has that trance vibe to it that is miles away from his normal minimalist techno. Evigt Morker just happened to be the only track I could find that could slowly transition out of that into something else. All of Kolsch’s albums are definitely on the trance side of techno. Bicep basically capitalized on the old sounds last year. And the Fatima Yamaha track sounds like a remix of EXhale. I topped it with Rum and Black (SUAD label) because that breakbeat sound is very much a part of the old school anything goes ethos. Downtempo tags means someone is being lazy, or they have a bot reading music files (just like the ones that guess my age correctly on the Quizzes on Facebook). For me, Trance is a feeling more than an actual label. I’m outa the loop for sure so I’ll say this is “what I think trance should be”
This discussion could go on and on… but I tend to think that when trance became defined as a genre, it lost the feeling it originally had. That hypnotic feeling you can lose yourself in, which is certainly not confined to any one genre. As for electronica/downtempo, well, Beatport used to have a genre of chillout, and another genre of electronica, which kind of made sense, but now they’ve lumped them together so that styles which have nothing to do with each other are in the same category – it just seems to be a catch-all for anything that doesn’t fit anywhere else. I do wonder how they classify tracks – it doesn’t always seem as though there’s a human doing it.

Very well done. This isn’t what people call trance now, just good music. Well mixed and chosen, I enjoyed every minute.
