2017 has been a great year for Pop music. Outside of the first track by Childish Gambino (here because I discovered it in 2017), the tracks here are songs from albums I really enjoyed this year. The last number of years have produced drab lo-fi clicks and drones to high praise from the critics, but very little worth playing more than once. There were exceptions, like last year’s Avalanches return, but this year so many of my favorite album bands released good to great lps. This is not as much a “Mix” as much as a Mixtape as it was back in the days when we made cassette compilations. I didn’t have room for Saint Etienne or James Holden and the Animal Spirits, other great LPs this year. Already, I see The Go! Team has a release scheduled for January 2018.
Been enjoying this on the car stereo this morning. A lot of stuff I don’t know, so will be getting repeated listens from me! Hope you are well briscoe, my new mix should be up in a few days…
Thank you! And very much looking forward to your new mix. There are two more albums, from the French, that were great this year as well, Bertrand Burgalat “Les choses qu’on ne peut dire à personne” and Charlotte Gainsbourg “Rest”. One idea I have for a future mix is an all French mix, but don’t know if that would be too much in one sitting. Other albums that were good this year by Adrian Sherwood and Pinch, Clock Opera, Visti & Meyland, Slowdive, Ride, DJ Hell, Fhloston Paradigm, Richard Kirk, Marnie (Ladytron), Joey Negro, Jana Rush, Brokenchord, Irresistible Force, Kolsch, Lindstrom, Krikor, Matias Aguayo, Manik, Tennis, Goldie, etc. And so many other comps and mixes. 2017 has been a really good year for music, which I hope carries into 2018. Since Resident Advisor has decided not to do end of year lists, I decided to do my own.
Enjoyed this. Like Len, wasn’t familiar with most of it. Top work Briscoe.
Thanks Matrix! I’d have to say, of these albums, the one I listened to most was the obvious one Gorillaz. Though not as good as Plastic Beach, it packs a punch. After that: Phoenix, French Kiwi Juice, Jonti, and Jamiroqui were my top five this year. Here’s hoping the Avalanches put together a stitch up of the extra stuff they didn’t use from their last album in 2018.
The goldfrapp and Joe Goddard are my fave tracks. Nice
The Goddard album is really good, with familiar samples in new context. Goldfrapp always brings on the quality, this year again.
