It’s a mix of two halves – the start is great soul and hip hop and finish is sun kissed Brazilian gear. I enjoyed it, but I particularly loved the start, would like to hear a whole mix like that. Great work including one of J dillas finest.
Thank you Len, appreciate as always! This started a couple years back with a batch of Cumbia/disco records from Ecuador I picked up at the local Goodwill Thrift store. Sad to say, but look forward to someone with cool tastes passing away and their family dumping their records off. The Cumbia records are from the 70s, but I didn’t have enough for a whole mix, nor would I want to do that. Certain music is great in small doses. I also had 70s drum machine tracks I wanted to make into a mix. I felt the best way to ease into Cumbia, come in soft and slow with soul, build up the tempo with Brazil, then cumbia, then soften the blow with Brazil disco, then finish with the Ecuador disco. I had one record I wanted to use in the Cumbia part, but the horn levels were low so didn’t translate, but I wish it did because it kicks butt (https://www.discogs.com/Don-Medardo-Y-Sus-Players-Asi-Se-Toca-Para-Quito/release/3981312)
Certainly a worthwhile worldwide journey!
Funny that, I preferred the Latin tunes here – especially the two Brazilian funk tracks before the cumbia, I’d love to hear more like that. And also Ripa Na Xulipa which has an extremely infectious groove. Which ones are Ecuador, the last two?
Thanks Shining Steve. The last two as well as some of the Cumbia tracks (Eduardo Zurita, Huberto Santacruz) are from Ecuador. The Marcos Valle album just got re-issued. The Ripa Na Xulipa track, I agree, lots of fun, gets stuck in my head when I wake up. I wish I knew enough disco from Brasil and disco from Africa to warrant good genre-local specific mixes. As it is, I have a lot of small lists that I sometimes combine as a journey, because otherwise they’d never make it to a mix.
Apart from the closing couple of tracks, I thought this was great. Number 6 is a great find.
Thank you Matrix! I was going for something different than I’ve done before. Also, I wanted to do with cumbia what the Avalanches did with calypso and soca in their Live from Cornerstone mix, where they introduced soca in a small clock without overwhelming the set.
