Thanks Len! I had some ethereal disco tracks I’ve been wanting to use, but not enough to make a mix of. I bought the After Dark comps by Bill Brewster over the holiday, and was inspired to mix it up with deep house to flesh out the mix. Also, as like those mixes, the last tune is slower and separate. I love the disco clapping breakdown in the middle of Alan Parson’s Project, just wished there was a good edit of it (the only mix I found was a cheesy house mix that didn’t know when to give up the kick drum to let the track breathe).
Thanks Len! Love Unltd ‘s “Welcome Aboard” just stuck in my head, so I had to make use of it. Vincent Montana’s “It Looks Like Love” has been a fave for a very long time. In the last year I’ve really liked “Beam Me Up” by Midnight Magic, and the rest of the mix just fleshes out the mood. I painted myself into a corner with the 1st George Duke track, so the transition out isn’t pretty, but I figured another Duke track wouldn’t be too bad.
I’ve always liked the approach of a slower and separate last track. Some of the best Essential Mixes ended like that. I’ve been hunting for years for a track Danny Howells placed at the end of his storming Essential Mix of 1998-01-11. It’s tracklisted as Cocteau Twins – Otterley, but I’m not sure if this is correct from what I’ve found.
Thank you Matrix! I love the idea of an encore for a dj set, end of the night, and the dj plays something that caps off the night with a memorable fun tune. I’m not familiar with that Cocteau Twins track, but I really like their music. First time I heard them was Blue Bell Knoll album in 88 (bought it on cassette, played it over and over).
The one uploaded on mixcloud seems to end before the Cocteau track comes in so the last track is actually that Fuzzy Logic one. Not sure if the actual radio broadcast went on a bit longer after Tong did his closing bit
Cheers Groovypanda. I think my copy is the complete one (the reason I can’t cut it out of the mix is all the closing Tong comments) but I’ll check the Fuzzy Logic track just in case. Anyway, there’s a strong argument to let the track retain its mystique by leaving it to be enjoyed at the end of Howells’ mix.
By the way, you’re next up on Archive Mix In The Spotlight 🙂
I’ve listened to a radio rip now where you can hear Annie Nightingale starting to speak and the last track is definitely the Fuzzy Logic one, specifically the Danny Howells & Shango remix:
Yes, that’s the one! The track is not particularly special until she kicks in with the higher-pitched singing of ‘Burning up into my mind’. Listening to it in isolation now it doesn’t seem amazing, which perfectly illustrates how well Howells nailed it in context as the ‘different’ closing track.
You guys are all Awesome on bmbx.org I really enjoy your talents and music selections. I have a lot of music, many different genres and I am having one hell of a time organizing them. I was wondering how you guys sort and organize your music? Any help would be awesome!

Brilliant – some disparate tunes mixed lovingly together. Really enjoyed it and must listen again with the track list to hand.
