1. Choose a single second hand record shop local to you.
2. You have £15 Maximum to spend (but anyone spending much less gets extra kudos of course).
3. You may not use more than 5 records or CDs (or cassettes if you like!) for the challenge
4. If poss take a couple of photos of the shop you bought the records or CDs in, what the records are etc.
5. You then have one month to make a track using ONLY audio sampled from the records or CDs you bought. (looping up single cycles to make a synth sound is OK, but taking some direct inspiration from the source material is a GOOD IDEA.)
Love hearing an exclusive mix of exclusive tracks, presented from experimental ambience to funkiness. Since I don’t know any of the tracks , it’s hard to get a reference point, but it is always engaging. It’s gotta be hard to be limited to these tracks and still pull off the right balance, but you did. What is the back story on the challenge?
I’m in a Facebook group called the chops where we chat audio stuff and do a challenge once in a while. The latest one is ‘no drums’ – very much a challenge! This one was an exercise in sampling and going out and finding records was a challenge in and of itself. All the guys are super talented and the result was interesting seeing what folks came up with!
Listening to it with the production explained makes it an even better listen. I love hitting up the dollar bin for “undiscovered” gems. I would imagine for the next challenge there will be heavy Jazz influence for pianos, basslines, or drone ambience, or 50’s vocal records sans drums. Without a beat to anchor, sounds like a challenge indeed.
