The premise of this mix is an alphabetical theme and for each letter to have a (if possible well known) sample from a classic 80s pop culture film beginning with that letter and a track beginning with that letter. The tracks have to be something I believe would stand repeat listening (hence Madonna and Michael Jackson as the most obvious 80s icon omissions).
The only ones that I had to compromise with because of lack of alternatives were the films beginning with J and Q, both selections beginning with X (my defence is that at least Olivia Newton John is bolstered by ELO’s masterly touch on the track) and maybe the Z track… pretty cheesy.
70s mix already well under way……
I was in 1st grade 1980 and a Junior in 1989, so this is a soundtrack to the culture for sure. Really enjoyed this, brings back lots of memories.
I too enjoyed this, Matrix. It’s a big challenge to make an effective mix of 80’s tunes, me thinks. DJ Spinbad’s (1996) 80s Megamix comes to mind as a great example of such mixes. The film samples used (all 80’s movies) really helped tie the varied musical styles and genres together for a COLLECTIVE whole. A lot of great things happened in music during that Decade, and a lot of it shines out here with the likes of The Talking Heads, The Clash, Prince, Queen & David Bowie, to name a few. And films such as Aliens, Gremlins, Poltergeist, and Robocop are classics. This was, all-n-all, a great way to spend my Sunday afternoon. Peace.
Thanks guys. There are obvious perils to going for classic pop culture choices – one man’s acceptable classic is another man’s hackneyed old chestnut.
Watched Ferris Bueller with my girls again at the weekend; of all the stuff I’ve introduced them to from the 80s (and earlier!) this has been the greatest success.
What a great idea, and track selection. looking forward to this, (that wonderful Mai Tai track takes me back instantly!) cheers hp
Matrix. Sure you’re right, the word “Classic” should always be used in quotes.
My two oldest kids just turned teenagers and they first watched Ferris Bueller a month or two ago and really love it. In my mind, true “Classics,” with all its many categories and sub-categories, always tend to appeal to future generations. Peace.
P.S What GRAND covers! Peace.
HP, gonna burn those letters you’ve been sending me 😉
Thanks Warvadal, thanks re: the covers. They took a while, but I figure that when a mix is painstakingly crafted then the covers should be too. Sometimes an image will do, but not in this case.
BOSS concept… on board the 80s EPIC ride now… burning down the house!
SO looking forward to the 70’s!!
Thanks! The 70s mix will take a couple more weeks, but as a taster it will of course start with “Saigon…… shit”.
Massively impressive results here.
You had a smile on my face from the tunes, & the theme.
Great work. Thanks.
Great stuff – soundtracked our trip to the new forest and I was singing a lot of the way! Wasnt too keen on the bronski beat cover of I feel love however 😉
Thanks guys. I knew that the Bronski Beat track would be risky for some, but they were one of my favorites in the 80s. Probably still have both their albums on cassette somewhere!
I liked the bronski beat song a lot. Worked fine in here.
I was taking a closer look at the covers, & noticed how impressive they were. Well-designed, & quite legible. Thanks.
The covers took a few hours. Just finished the covers in the same style for the 70s mix, which will be posted on Monday.
Wonderful idea. Enjoying this already. Will be onto the 70’s mix as well. Top notch.
Loved this, must have taken some time putting it all together and now I have the 70s as well to look forward to. I don’t get round to comment on all your mixes but the quality is always there. You sure are the most prolific mixer dude here! Anyway, great job once again, cheers hp. “anyone, anyone… anyone”
Thanks guys. Means a lot.
XYZ 60s mix now forming…
