It’s with great sadness that I must inform you all that Naz has tragically passed away in his sleep last night. This is all I know for the time being.
I’m sure you’ll all join me in sending our heartfelt sympathy to Eugene’s wife, family and friends.
I would like to say a big THANK YOU for giving us all a voice with this site. You are a proper star and will be sorely missed, mate…
Rest in peace brother

Very sorry to hear this. RIP Naz.
Very sad news. RIP.
Such shocking news. Naz’s efforts in creating and maintaining this site has given me many years of undefinable pleasure, you’ve left a legacy to be proud of. RIP Eugene.
Holy shit. What a shock, thank you for leaving us such a great legacy. Rest in peace man. hp
Shocked and saddened to hear this news. Naz was always helpful and friendly, and a true inspiration in bringing us all together. May he rest in peace with a good playlist.
I became acquainted with naz online in 2000 via the Napster tech support forum. From there we both started hanging around on an IRC chat room dedicated to another p2p client and became friends.
What grew into bmbx happened from us making a bet about who could make a better mp3 mix/compilation. I made a quick/dirty website to host the mixes, and discovered others in the community liked the idea and wanted to make mixes – we reserved a URL and b00mb0x was born.
We spent a lot of time on chat together between 2000 and 2005. In 2003 he came to NYC to visit me and stayed a week and a half – we had a great time together. We also created a blog together and a troll website called freemichael that was a lot of fun.
In 2005 I got divorced, my life got a lot less stable, and I pretty much left b00mb0x to him, which is why I don’t know many (any) of you (except axl – hi axl!). If it wasn’t for him I would’ve closed the site to new mixes, leaving it as an archive – so his work and dedication are very much responsible for this second life of the website.
Even though I was no longer contributing much to bmbx except for occasional technical stuff, I stayed friends with Eugene. He was a very funny guy, great taste, with a wonderful and playful creative streak.
He came to NYC again this August for his honeymoon and I got to see him again and finally got to meet Cherryl. I actually drove them out to the suburbs to a mall to go clothes shopping, which was pretty funny. I then took them on the East River Ferry and we went out to dinner. They both seemed very happy.
We last emailed in January, about The Thick of It of all things.
I sort of don’t believe this has happened, and am still hoping to hear him knocking at my door, announcing he’s faked his own death for some awesome reason. It just seems too crazy to be real for me. I remain quite shocked and sad. I will miss him very, very much, and will always remember our period working and hanging out together from 2000-2005 as a great, happy time in my life.
Bye Eugene. I will miss you very much.

very sad news indeed, what a great loss. peace.
Mike,
Thank you for that lovely insight. I am so sorry for your loss, and offer truly heartfelt condolences to all who knew Naz here and elsewhere. The mixes here bring great joy, amusement, inspiration, and sometimes a touch of sadness too, which has its own value as an emotion, and reminds us of our humanity. They make my world a better place, and for that, I’m very grateful to you both.
This news is as tragic as hearing of the loss of one’s family. Naz WAS a member of an international family of music lovers and explorers. A pint (or two) will be lifted in his memory this weekend. Rest in peace my brother. You’re absence will be painfully noticed for a long time to come. Prayers of comfort for friends and family. PEACE!
wow – very sad to hear this — my condolences to his friends and family.
“Why do bad things happen, to good people?” RIP
Honestly… I am shocked. He will be missed!!
So sad. My thoughts go out to his family.
Just… wow.
I was hoping for another April Fool’s type joke as Naz did a few years back. Sadly, it looks like it is no joke at all. This is horrible news. Naz was kind and generous in his comments and hosting. My prayers go out to his wife and family, a true original will be missed.
Really really shocking news. RIP Eugene.
Sleep well my friend, you will be missed.
I’m also saddened to read of this. The second of these sad times in the last 24 hrs.
Along with (waves hello to both ya) Assorted & Axl, I met him yrs ago amongst the Napster era, then onto another app, then here to b00mb0x.
His antics & remarks along with laughing moments/jests will be well missed here & others who got to know him for his pranks & “quick” comments.
From here in Australia, our condolences to his family & all concerned.
As we would say in Maori… (yes, I’m from NZ but live in the “oven”)… Ka Kite Ano my friend.
Sad news & a big shock – R.I.P Naz
First time here in quite a while. Shocked and saddened by this news. RIP Naz
