A trip back to the sounds I was listening to in the early 90s, bleepy stuff on Warp, AFX, Black Dog, FSOL (under various guises) electronica and even a bit of early Orbital.
And it all fits on one side of a battered D90, just. Tape hissing not included.
Mr Lovely – 1990 909
Nightmares on Wax – Dextrous
Aphex Twin – Actium
B12 – Obsessed
Black Dog – Virtual
Sweet Exorcist – Testone
Orbital – Oolaa
LFO – Love Is The Message
Metropollis – Metropolis
Forgemasters – Track With No Name
Coco Steel & Lovebomb – Feel It
FSOL – Pulse State
Mental Cube – Q
Autechre – Basscadet
808 State – Pacific(808 98 Edit)
Fabulous. But I guess you knew I’d like this 🙂 nice mixing and love that sample on the intro!
when House was great. and I had a lot of spare time
Cheers Len – thought this would be up your strasse.
Actually mixed chunks of it live (for a change) – tried to give it a bit more of an old skool feel. Might try and do side 2 at some point – same era, but maybe a post-club vibe.
And yeah, that sample’s ace innit!
You can’t beat nostalgia mixes.
yes, but nostalgia mixes aren’t as good as they used to be
sigh 😈
those were the daze
Think I’m gonna enjoy this as well. 🙂
Regardin nostalgia, doncha think its really a thing of the past lads ?
:-/
Well, its all rather lovely innit, erm, Mr Lovely !
What a corker. Great stuff. 🙂
As its a “mini-mix” (kinda) ive done a rewind. Lovin it.
Beautifully put together sir.
Thank you 🙂
I remember house. Had this on vinyl, cassette and cd. Oh what fun to discover this music, to seek it out for yourself. Even in this day and age you can find new music, not force fed by what’s trendy, but us old folks remember house before it was called house. When KLF were the JAMMS and Psychic TV got bitten by the dance bug. When the Cabs where fab, and Maurice was talking about Acid the music. This brings back memories of fanzines and trading mix tapes. Thanks!
I’m going to look to my old box with cassette tape.I open the dusty paper box.Yesss …….. look at my Sony Walkman.A hand reaches for the first cassette.T Power, Galliano, Zig M, FSOL ISDN AntiEP Autechre, Orb, Fluke, System 7, KennyLarkin, CabaretVoltaire, Photek,St.Germain,ScanX,AuroraBorealis….
Take out the battery from the remote control. My wife will be very happy.Dzzzzz
Fantastic that the sight of a TDK D90 has resonated with you all.
It sounds like we’re all of a similar age, and all have a box of tapes like krojc’s stashed somewhere.
Love your sentiments Briscoe – nicely said. Yup, days of glory alright…
This was expertly mixed. You made these tracks pop like they are current tracks. Is that a remix of Dextrous , or your own remix on the fly? If this came out of my walkman back in the day , I would hope to have the same on both sides so I didn’t have to rewind each time. Killer.
Thanks Briscoe, kind words.
I did the Dextrous mix on the fly in ableton, cutting back and forth to a beat repeat effect to try to make it sound like I was juggling two copies – my skills on the decks would never have allowed me to do that for real! I (over)used the same trick quite a few times in the mix. The nice thing about ableton is you can do a number of takes of each mix and pick the one you like best before moving onto the next – a long way from ballsing up the last mix on a mixtape and having to rewind to the start.
Really pleased with how this mix has gone down, and to find so many like minded old souls out there!
Great mix Mr L, brought so many memories back.
This time in my left was during university when I was spending most of my grant on music like this. I must have picked up every WARP 12″ out there for a year or so. Then I had to choose between food and music 🙁
I remember fancying a girl like crazy because she has an Autechre album. Crazy.
Great mixing and tune selection.
so ye
played this mix a few times now..
superb
brought back loads of great memories especially metropolis.. was at a diy party round that year and one of them played that groove for like 20mins (felt like forever (ina good way like)..building ya up building ya up place went nuts! very sasha! anyways…
so ye, make the other side now please
@Ken – There’s far far worse reasons to like a girl, in fact having an Autechre album is one of the better ones I can think of! Glad you settled for food in the end, but I reckon a section of our respective record collections must very closely resemble each other.
@Bong – Ahh, DiY parties, went to several in Birmingham. Always impressed with anyone who can remember tunes (or anything) clearly from those days, but I remember DiY doing a similar trick with ‘Plastic Dreams’ one time – seemed like they played it all night – incredible.
Yup, will try to do side two at some point, but my vinyl is back in the UK and this selection was definitely the cream of what I have digitally of that style and time, so it may have to be a different slant but the same era.
only reason i remember that tune is cos we asked the dj for the name and then bought it a couple of days later and it became a staple for the rest of the year!
Enjoyed this. Rest of the household didn’t though… ah well, depends on where we were and what we were doing at the start of the 90s.
awesome mix… twenty years …wow I too remember the free time, record shops & pirate radio stations… I used the bumper packs of D90’s to tape the radio tunes… #goodtimes lovely mix mr lovely 😉
