I’ve been meaning to do this mix for a long time (I’ve left Mix 40 blank for the purpose ever since 2006). The premise is to take your Top 20 tracks of all time and mix them with samples from your Top 20 films of all time.
‘Top 20’ doesn’t necessarily mean ‘best’ of course, rather it’s a representation of music (or music makers) and films that made the most impression for whatever reason.
I found it interesting when compiling the music that some things made it in the list because the song was a killer even if I’m not a massive fan of the rest of the band’s output (e.g. The Smiths’ “I Know It’s Over”) and some made it because the band had to be there even if it was difficult to find a clear Top 20 killer track (e.g. Led Zeppelin).
I’ll post the film list later in case people want to guess.
Fantastic Mix!
I love the Age of Love part.
I think this is one of your best mixes so far.
Brilliant mix ! Love the pixies / Joe Pescii bit, and your final choice for the Led Zeppelin track isn’t bad at all.
Interesting tracklist – I could never do a mix like this because I could never choose my top 20 tracks of all time or my top 20 films of all time.
Looks a killer mate, just love that DMX/Tears for Fears mash up or whatever it is
cheers hp
Great concept. Great Mix. Looking forward to the film list. Peace.
some great tracks, like Age Of Love (still works), Pixies, Art of Noise. Classics, and Lebowski.
Cheers all. Steve, it was actually not as hard to pick the Top 20 music tracks as I expected (apart from needing to under-represent club/house tracks for the mix to make sense). I sorted iTunes by Artist and painstakingly selected all through the list, but once I had those original 60 or so it was quite easy to prune to the final 20.
Like I mentioned before, the Top 20s include things that made an impression, not necessarily what I would call ‘best’ (e.g. B52’s and a couple of the films).
I think picking Films 21-40 will be easier than the music tracks.
That film list in order of appearance:
Top Secret!
The Big Lebowski
Bad Taste
Goodfellas
The Thing
Pulp Fiction
Raging Bull
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly (if pushed, this is #1)
Time Bandits
Life Of Brian
This Is Spinal Tap
A Fistful Of Dynamite
Chinatown
Alien
Requiem For A Dream
Jaws (a close second)
Cape Fear
The Shining
Apocalypse Now
Godfather II
ace that
love the samps
especially the taps 🙂
Cheers! I must agree “The Good,…” is a classic among classics…It gets better with time. Of the list, “The Thing” has got to be tops for me. The samples that you used from the film, surely helped to convince me of that. Peace.
really good – some ace dialogue in there – some tunes not to my taste, but its obviously a very personal mix and for that I applaud. I dont normally listen to the eurythmics wandering down the street 😉
Thanks guys.
Very Nice. 😉
I think what stands this right out is simply how unusual a concept it is ?
Not to mention some top tunage ?
Great that you didnt go with what could have been obvious movie samples.
The Robert Shaw “Jaws” one still gives me ‘kin chills btw.
Really, really enjoyed this whole mix sir, fine work.
Bit of a journey.
Cheers.
🙂
Hi man, forgot to comment (again). Really really enjoyed this, top selection of films and top tunage as well. Right up my street!
2hours as well!!….you gonna need a bigger CD-R
many thanks hp 🙂
Cheers hp, much appreciated.
Just putting the finishing touches to another mix….4 in 4 months – for some reason have hit a rich seam of creativity…
