Well, its been almost 2 and a half months since I recorded my last mix for the b0x. With that in mind I thought I’d best get off my lazy ass, stop using my hopeless PC as an excuse and record something.
From my perspective this mix represents a bit of a change of direction for me. Normally, as you may already know, my mixes are 80 mins of pretty much house, breaks or trance.
With this one I thought I’d try a different approach. Its a mix of all the tracks that I’m playing or mixing a lot at the moment, spanning several genre’s. There may well be a sequel or two to this as there were numerous tracks I really wanted to include but couldn’t find space for.
Anyway, enough rambling. I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did making it this afternoon.
Thanks
Tom
well mate if this is anything like previous mixes i will be burning for the car, so its on its way now and im off to bed, so i reckon im going to have a happy breakfast
Cheers FS. Much appreciated! A few of the tracks (no.s 6,12 + 19) I first heard in Mr Scruff’s sets and on some of his CD’s so he was a part inspiration for this mix.
That Peter Gunn track I first heard in Stu’s awesome ‘Sound as one pound’ mix – I Managed to find it on eye tunes and instantly d/led it. Well worth the 79p!!!
Also, whilst on the subject – I think iTunes has come a long way since it first kicked off. Its surprising how much ‘underground’ material there is on there compared to when it first started up.
Also, I haven’t forgotten about the playlist mix, I keep meaning to e-mail you… just haven’t got around to it yet. Hopefully drop you a line in the next couple of days.
I’m back on nights after a nice holiday and everything is topsy turvy 🙁
Have to say, I thought it sounded familiar. I have seen him appear in your set lists before but It didn’t occur to me that it was the same track.
I d/led his EP on iTunes which was pretty good I thought. Dunno if you have heard it yet – you may have it already? – but The New Mastersounds album is pretty boss, I’ve been driving round with it full blast (In my Citroen Berlingo) and people – especially the townies/chavs – have been like, WTF???!!! 😀
Like Starsky and Hutch all over again… I wish!!!
Gonna listen to this again sometime soon, but this is defo your best mix imo, and possibly the best mix I’ve heard this year on the ‘box.
I really love the variety, and the mixing between genres is very smooth. The James Brown remix was good and bad in equal measures… not a fan of two step but it works in this instance. The house tracks that you played were fuckin boss as well!!! Quite a few fav tracks in there and also quite a few that I haven’t heard before.
Cheers Bong, going to try and squeeze some more reggae/dub stuff into future mixes. Not a genre I’m a massive fan of, but admittedly there are some classics. Saw Scruff the other night, first time I’ve seen him DJ on a Funktion-One sound system, and the results were incredible. He must have played about 2 hours of Dub alone and the sound was immense. His normal set up is pretty good anyway.
Stu, what can I say mate?! Many thanks indeed! Was hoping this mix would appeal to more people with the variety of tunes and hopefully its worked.
In all honesty its probably the most fun I’ve had making a mix for ages!
I think the next one will be in much the same style, possibly with a disco track or two thrown in for good measure.
Anyway, many thanks. Hope its as good second time around! 😉
Groove on indeed, nice work Tom. This put a smile on my face. Especially enjoyed the first funky section, and that Peter Gunn track is the biz. Only criticism is that I’ve heard Get A Move On too many times before, but great stuff nonetheless.
Yeah, I know what you mean Mr L. It does seem to receive a lot of airings. I have to admit its a personal favourite I never seem to tire of but it is a bit overused, be it on TV on the radio or in Clubs/Bars themselves.
Glad you liked the mix as a whole though. More where this came from! 😀
This is very good… the changes in direction (smoothly done) give this far more durability than a straight up main room house/breaks/trance mix for me. Going to burn this one…
Cheers Matrix, much appreciated. Next one will hopefully be similar in style to this this one. Maybe some more disco and a bit of crate digging thrown in for good measure 😉
Cheers HP, much appreciated. New Mix on the way, although I need to sort out a few problems with my less than reliable PC first. Its crashing like a bitch and there’s nothing worse than getting 50 minutes into a mix and then hearing the familiar Windows start up tune! Grrrrrrrr!
Hopefully all will be well soon!
Apologies again Tom for missing this first time around – as expected – has been the main player on my pod this week – lots of stuff for me to check out! I really think you should get a new COMputer so there can be more mixes – including a sequel!
Cheers for the nice comment S.A.T – I’ve planned a new mix, although actually mixing it is proving a problem at the moment as my mixer and CD players are both up the spout…
…I’m hoping and praying to get them sorted next week. Only thing that is for sure is that I’m a bit disappointed that they have both gone wrong, especially as they are only 4 years old…
…that said, my Martin T-Rexs (Lighting fixtures) went wrong after only 6 months and to make matters worse Martin don’t seem to be very good at replying to letters or e-mails! 🙁
…Anyways, enough doom and gloom.
The next mix will be bigger and better with a few exclusives that I’ve managed to blag; popped in for good measure! 😀
Groove On!

Yeah Peter Gunn is a great track… you get that Deela track from me as well?

Yeah, I’ve got the EP from the wonderful site that is http://www.gigacrate.com
I’ll check out itunes though if you’ve got it from there… didn’t think that itunes was worth a look tbh.
Tracklisting looks really good btw.
love the opener

Thanks Len, that track can be found on Mr Scruff’s Big Chill Classics CD. The CD is unmixed which is perfect! 🙂
haha – i’ve got that cd – excellent!
