Mmmmm. Problems with the audio player again – the mix sounds like it is slowed down. Recommend people download the file rather than listen on the audio player, at least until I work out what settings to use on my mp3 software.
For any fellow pedants, the Led Zeppelin track I used from Coda is “Bonzo’s Montreux” and not “Wearing And Tearing” as I mistakenly put on the tracklist. Bonzo was the nickname of drummer John Bonham, by several accounts a complete arsehole when drunk, but – as you can hear from this track – fantastic with a pair of sticks.
A most enjoyable listen.Wiiiide variety & successfully so.It comes across as many tracks you’d been wanting to use.Great use of the bonzos.Did you catch them on the reunion tour? Viv didn’t have as much stage presence as before.lol
The small faces track seemed to warp a bit.Mine doesn’t do that as far as I can recall. Not too thrilled with the killers stuff.Reminds me of dana carvey playing piano.

Yes, the variety was deliberate…hence the magpie title, although it took me a good long time to find a flow that I was satisfied with (chucking different styles together doesn’t work first time I find). The Killers stuff was a late addition…originally the knock on the door excerpt was going to be the start. Oh well, if you looked in a magpie’s nest you wouldn’t like all of the shiny objects that it has been stealing.
As for the Small Faces warp near the start, I must confess to some laziness. This version comes from the Air Essential Mix in 1998 and seems to have a lot better sound quality (I think the technical term is ‘ooomph’) than the ‘normal’ versions that I could find, so I decided to put up with the warp. And it’s just like accidentally pressing Record on your old cassette mixtapes, no? 😀
aye re: the warp.Certainly others enjoyed the killers bits anyway.I made a b & w toon mix that got massively panned, but those who liked it were extremely complimentary. There’s room for all. 😉
I do like most of the songs herein.
Where does your version of “The man who sold the world” come from ? It’s been so long since I heard it I can’t remember if it’s the original version.
dEZ, as far as I know Bowie’s version is the original version from the same album name in 1970. The only other version I know is the Nirvana unplugged one, though a quick internet search throws Lulu up as another artist using this song. My magpie instincts are telling me to stay clear of Lulu.
As for the radio….nothing personal at all, as I am sure it is right up my eclectic street (many of your mixes are). I just don’t tend to be around at a fixed time to make the radio shows a regular event, and there is normally a long list of mixes demanding my attention.
I’m going to start looking for various versions of that song.
I’ve the duet with lulu on my hard drive, it’s sweet but not great, Bowie sings on it. It’s far from the one you did put on Magpie Instincts.
Wonderful MiX 🙂 Loved it and enjoyed the ride! It was nice to be face to face with the man who sold the world again. It’s been a while… Very nice to see someone with the same eclectic mind bending taste that I have. It’s ALWAYS a challenge to blend multiple genres but when your done the satisfaction is quite rewarding 8) Great Mix Man! Thanks for the hard work. I have enjoyed the fruits of your labour.
OK, I’ve given this two listen’s now. It’s just great! Saving it among my GEMS! Wanted to mention that the version you have of “Skeewiff – Coming Home Baby” is one I have not heard yet. Very nice flute segmant and sax segmant is awesome as well! Very Very nice!!!! It had me chair dancing… I might even borrow this one for my next mix 8)

a note to mixers
to be played on the audio bar, at the right speed, they need to be 44hz at whatever bitrate you fancy 😈
liking it mucho so far. nice one.
Re-encoded this mix, so the audio bar sounds fine now.
Great selection of tunes……as usual
a note to siteops
with a sampling rate of 44 Hz (44 per second) you could almost hear each single sample 😉 of course you were talkin ’bout 44kHz i guess
playlist looks excellent though… will download that 2nite

Listened to this in the car tonight, sounds like the late night channel on the radio that plays the best in eclectic
… Why does no one from b00mb0x never listen to my sathurdays streamer broadcasts ? . . . .
Yet, what about the Bowie Tune please ? I can’t find it in my cd collection, it’s all messed up.
