Thought I’d play around with some Disco/Soul/Hip Hop tracks this time around. It met with mixed success, as per usual. Overall I’m quite happy with it though. Track list as follows –
1. Nash – 100 Million Ways
2. Real People feat. Angela Johnson – In The Sun
3. Plantlife – When She Smiles, She Lights The Sky (4Hero Remix)
4. Wille Hutch – Brothers Gonna Work It Out
5. Bobby Womack – Across 110th Street
6. Randy Crawfors – Street Life
7. Voices of East Harlem – Wanted, Dead, Or Alive
8. A+D – Beethoven’s Fith Gold Digger
9. Loleatta Holloway – Hit & Run
10. The Salsoul Orchestra – It’s Good For The Soul
11. Hairy Diamond – Givin’ Up
12. Pete Kuzma feat. Bilal – High & Dry
13. John Legend – Refuge (When It’s Cold Outside)
14. Animaniacs – Dough, Some Cash, A Wad of Cash
Nah, not perfect. Some of the tracks are beatmapped by eye on this mix and they are slightly out.
Sometimes you have to accept that certain tracks won’t map together, or at least I do. On this mix particularly I just gave up on some transitions and wedged another track in between the two songs.
This is only the third mix I’ve attempted so I still feel like I’ve got a long way to go.
If you listen to mixes by people like Briscoe, Matrix or Ambientfusion, their transitions are really much more complicated than mine and flawless to boot.
I think it’s just practice and how much time you put into a mix. This one was more rushed than my other two and I think that shows.
Good work Ross, really enjoyed this one. I must ask though what this whole beatmapping lark is that you’re talking about. I’m using Cool Edit 2 and I thought the only way to do it was mixing by eye.
Still not dipped into Acid 5 which a lot of guys seem to use, simply because I can’t take the appearance.

When you add a track to an Acid project you get the option to beatmap it. Essentially you set the first beat, and the length of a loop. This then sets the bpm of a track.
Then Acid will alter everytrack to the over-riding bpm of the project. It means that every track is automatically in sync with the others and as such mixing them is much easier.
I’m sure you can appreciate that this works much better for certain tracks, for example house music which has a regular bpm that rarely changes much. For tracks like the ones in this mix it wasn’t that helpful because the bpm changes throught the track, and the beats are much more complex, so that a simple match the bpm strategy didn’t really work.
I doubt any of that made sense 😀
If you use Acid even once then it will become obvious what I’m trying badly to say.
Great tracks , and fun to boot. Starts out wuth Rae & Christian feat Pharcyde -It Aint Nothin Like, which I didn’t see on the tracklist. Enjoyed this one. I use Acid for the mixes that have tracks that are impossible to mix in Traktor. Sometimes you just have to quick edit or fade out for a segue if you’ve no other option. Not a crime, many djs do it and it works well for that anticipation factor. Sometimes you need a breather between the next onslot of beats. Keep up the good work.
1st track is Nash. Rae and Christian sampled it and mixed it in with the Pharcyde track for “It Ain’t Nothin Like”.
The Nash track was pulled from Rae & Chrstain’s “Another Late Night” compilation.
